Habitrails of the Mind
Artist's Statement This series of encaustic work began in early 2020 when suddenly we were confined to home and our own minds. Our routines changed dramatically causing disturbances of every variety- money, health, spiritual, safety etc. However these"disturbances" also revealed how rutted the mind can become traveling well-worn paths. This series attempts to help the viewer engage in two ways and notice how they are different. Either we can engage with the mind--who chatters constantly, compares, attempts to "fix things" and judges; or we can engage with the higher self- who simply observes these thoughts and feelings. These pieces are have hundreds of hand carved lines- some deep, some shallow, some gouged and redacted areas, some areas of erosion like memories we struggle to reconstruct. However when the viewer stands back, they may observe pattern without focusing attention on one particular thing. This is what we achieve in meditation. This is where I find peace.
